A Daughter’s Story of Carrying What Her Mother Couldn’t

A woman once shared something with me that broke my heart gently.
She told me about a moment in her life that shaped everything—without her even realizing it.

Her mother once said she thought about ending her pregnancy because the doctors warned the baby might be sick.
To her mother, it was just a passing thought, maybe even a small confession.
But to this woman, those words echoed like a quiet wound deep inside.

“I shouldn’t have been born,” she whispered. “My mother wanted to let me go.”

When a child hears the word abortion, it can sound like rejection.
Like being unwanted.
Like danger.

As she spoke, tears filled her eyes.
And I asked her gently:

Who really had those fears? You, or your mother?

She paused, then said softly:

It was my mother’s fear. Her doubts. Her pain.

I told her:

"That’s her burden to carry, not yours. Despite it all, she chose life for you.
You don’t have to hold her pain or guilt. Just the precious gift of your life."

I invited her to say silently:

"Mom, I tried to carry your fears, but I see now they aren’t mine.
I give them back to you, because you know how to carry them.
And I hold only the life you gave me. Thank you, Mom.
I see you. I see your humanity, your doubts, your love."

This is what Family Constellations teaches us:
To return what isn’t ours.
Not to blame or punish,
But to free ourselves and heal.

Because the greatest gift we can accept is life itself.

If you feel like you carry invisible burdens, maybe it’s time to let go.
